Povidone Iodine 10% Solution 100ml (Wilux)

Pronunciation

  • POE-vi-done EYE-oh-dine

Trade Name

  • Wilux Povidone Iodine 10% Solution

Classification

  • Therapeutic: Antiseptic
  • Pharmacologic: Iodophor

Pregnancy Category

  • Category C

Indications

  • Antiseptic for the preparation of the skin prior to surgery.
  • Treatment and prevention of infections in wounds, cuts, and abrasions.
  • Disinfection of the skin and mucous membranes before, during, and after surgery.

Mechanism of Action

  • Povidone-iodine is a complex of polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone) and iodine. It releases iodine gradually, which works by penetrating the cell walls of microorganisms and disrupting protein and nucleic acid structure and synthesis, leading to cell death. It is effective against a wide range of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Increased absorption through large wounds, burns, or mucous membranes.
  • Distribution: Local effect at the site of application.
  • Metabolism: Iodine is metabolized in the body to iodide.
  • Excretion: Excreted primarily in the urine.

Contraindications and Precautions

  • Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone-iodine. Hyperthyroidism or other thyroid diseases. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment.
  • Precautions: Avoid use in neonates and during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary due to the potential risk of iodine absorption. Prolonged use should be avoided to prevent systemic iodine toxicity. Consult a healthcare provider if using on large areas of the skin or for prolonged periods.

Adverse Reactions and Side Effects

  • Common: Local irritation, redness, and itching at the application site.
  • Serious: Rarely, systemic absorption can lead to iodine toxicity, causing symptoms such as metabolic acidosis, thyroid dysfunction, and renal impairment. Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur but are rare.

Interactions

  • Drug-Drug: May interact with lithium, increasing the risk of hypothyroidism. Avoid simultaneous use with other antiseptics or topical medications unless advised by a healthcare provider.
  • Food: No significant interactions.

Route/Dosage

  • Topical (Solution):
    • Apply the solution to the affected area 1-3 times daily, or as directed by a healthcare provider. The area should be cleaned before application.

Availability Formulations

  • Wilux Povidone Iodine 10% Solution: Available in 100 ml bottles as a topical solution.
