ALUGEL SUSP 100ML

Pronunciation

  • AL-yoo-jel

Trade Name

  • Alugel

Classification

  • Therapeutic: Antacid
  • Pharmacologic: Aluminum hydroxide

Pregnancy Category

  • Category C

Indications

  • Relief of symptoms associated with hyperacidity such as heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach.
  • May be used as an adjunct in the treatment of peptic ulcer disease or gastritis.
  • Used to manage hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic renal failure.

Mechanism of Action

  • Aluminum hydroxide neutralizes gastric acid by raising the pH of the stomach contents. It also binds phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble aluminum phosphate, which is excreted in feces.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption: Minimal systemic absorption from the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Distribution: Remains in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Metabolism: Not metabolized.
  • Excretion: Excreted in feces.
  • Half-life: Not applicable due to minimal systemic absorption.

Contraindications and Precautions

  • Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to aluminum hydroxide or any component of the formulation; severe renal impairment due to the risk of aluminum accumulation.
  • Precautions: Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, the elderly, and those on a low-phosphate diet or with hypophosphatemia. Long-term use can lead to phosphate depletion.

Adverse Reactions and Side Effects

  • Common: Constipation, aluminum toxicity (with prolonged use or in renal impairment).
  • Serious: Hypophosphatemia, encephalopathy (in cases of significant aluminum accumulation).

Interactions

  • Drug-Drug: May interfere with the absorption of other medications such as tetracyclines, quinolones, and digoxin; separate dosing by at least 1-2 hours. Can decrease the effects of iron supplements and thyroid hormones.
  • Food: Food can affect the effectiveness; usually taken between meals and at bedtime for best results.

Route/Dosage

  • Oral (Suspension): The typical dose for adults is 5-10 ml taken 3-4 times daily or as needed. For hyperphosphatemia management, the dose may vary depending on the phosphate levels and physician's recommendations.
  • Pediatric Dosage: Should be determined by a healthcare professional based on age and weight.

Availability Formulations

  • Alugel Suspension: Available in 100 ml bottles as an oral suspension. Shake well before use.
