Indications

• Relief of symptoms associated with hyperacidity such as heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach.

Mechanism of Action

• Aluminum hydroxide neutralizes gastric acid by raising the pH of the stomach contents. It also binds phosphate in the gastrointestinal tract, forming insoluble aluminum phosphate, which is excreted in feces.

Contraindications and Precautions

Adverse Reactions and Side Effects

• Serious: Hypophosphatemia, encephalopathy (in cases of significant aluminum accumulation).

Interactions

• Drug-Drug: May interfere with the absorption of other medications such as tetracyclines, quinolones, and digoxin; separate dosing by at least 1-2 hours. Can decrease the effects of iron supplements and thyroid hormones.
• Food: Food can affect the effectiveness; usually taken between meals and at bedtime for best results.
