Indications

• Prevention and treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy.

Mechanism of Action

• Emeton, often containing metoclopramide or a similar dopamine antagonist, works by blocking dopamine receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) of the brain, which reduces the sensation of nausea and prevents vomiting.

Contraindications and Precautions

• Precautions: Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment, depression, Parkinson's disease, and in the elderly. Long-term use can lead to tardive dyskinesia.

Adverse Reactions and Side Effects

• Common: Drowsiness, fatigue, restlessness, headache.
• Serious: Extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., tremor, rigidity), tardive dyskinesia (potentially irreversible), neuroleptic malignant syndrome, depression, and seizures.

Interactions

• Drug-Drug: May increase the risk of extrapyramidal reactions when used with antipsychotics; can enhance the sedative effects of CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives); may interact with medications affecting dopamine levels.
• Food: Food may delay the absorption but does not significantly affect the overall effectiveness.
